Abstract

The paper gives consideration to the inventions and discoveries in the field of thermal hydraulics of reactors and nuclear power plants (NPP). In the course of experimental and analytical studies in justification of the optimum design and engineering solutions, the new and unexpected effects should be discovered, which can change the conventional solutions and establish the unknown phenomena important for the macroscience. A review is provided concerning the outstanding results obtained at the SSC RF – IPPE research laboratories, with the features of novelty both in the area of physical phenomena (scientific discoveries) and engineering solutions (inventions). They include temperature stratification of water in the VVER models, unusualhydraulic coupling, abnormally early occurrence of hydroelastic vibrations of rough rods, heat transfer reduction in the heat exchanger with the heating heat carrier upflow, abnormally early intensification of thermolysis on the surface with "holes", etc. The subject matter of the inventions presented in the USSR copyright certificates and the RF patents includes the analytical theory, the theory ofapproximate modeling, the inverse problem method, the issues of violation of geometrical similarity of the models and prototype;the porous body model; thermal modeling of sodium reactor installation in the air and water, the aspects of increased coolant mixing in the fuel assembly volume at significant power density non-uniformity.
