Abstract
The paper is devoted to the technology of using eutectic sodium-potassium alloy as a coolant for nuclear power plants. The historical aspect highlights the motives for using this alloy, the process of its development and its role in the energy sector. The results of studies that made it possible to use the alloy as a coolant and the existing experience of use are presented. The methods and technical means used both in scientific research and in practice to achieve the required quality of the coolant and its control are described. Attention is paid to the development and state of the regulatory documents governing the use of this coolant. The successful use of this coolant in space nuclear installations BUK and TOPAZ is noted. However, special attention is paid to the unresolved problems that currently arise during the development and creation of new installations with increased requirements for power, service life, safety and reliability. In this regard, some new approaches to the problems of coolant purification and impurity control are proposed.
