Abstract

A new moderator is proposed: radiogenic lead based on isotope 208Pb with small neutron capture cross-section. Its use in a fast reactor makes it possible to slow down the chain fission reaction on prompt neutrons. This can improve safety of fast reactor. Radiogenic lead with high 208Pb content can be recovered from thorium (as well as thorium-uranium) ores. This has been confirmed by the investigations performed at San Paulo University in Brazil.
