Abstract
The radial-axial bearing unit of MCP-2 operating with sodium is an engineering device which is part of a secondary circuit main circulation pump of BN-1200M reactor plant and is designed to receive axial force acting on the main circulation pump rotor. Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau has designed and manufactured a full-scale radial-axial bearing unit mockup and a test section to test it. It should be noted that, as of now, no research of the friction couple material used in designs of axial bearings operating with sodium has been performed. No plain bearings of such big dimensions have ever been developed previously (that represents a process issue from the viewpoint of manufacturing accuracy of friction surfaces) operating with a low-viscosity medium. As a result of research and experimental activities involving various materials used to manufacture friction couples, the most serviceable materials were determined. Distillate was the working medium for the tests. No requirements were set to the distillate quality inspection. The set of research activities confirmed operability of the structure on water at various medium viscosities up to the relevant sodium viscosity (during water tests at 80°С) and determined the operating limits of such bearing and confirmed the possibility to use the selected materials.
