Abstract

The article provides an overview of the results of the work of JSC SSC RF – IPPE in the field of Stirling engine development, carried out in the 80–90s of the twentieth century. It is noted that, despite a number of advantages, Stirling engines with direct heating by fuel combustion products have significant disadvantages, the main of which are associated with significant nonuniformity in the temperature of the heater tubes and low heat transfer coefficients from combustion products, which limits the service life and reduces engine efficiency. The possibility and results of creating a universal heat supply system based on heat pipes that transfers heat from combustion products of various fuels, from a thermal accumulator, from a nuclear power plant or from the sun to the working fluid of a Stirling engine are shown. Several types of heat exchangers based on heat pipes have been developed, manufactured and tested as part of Stirling engines. The first Stirling engine in the USSR with an universal heat supply system was created, which reached the world-class technical specifications of that time. As a result of the work carried out at IPPE at the end of the 20th century, it was shown that the application of the heat pipe principle in heat supply systems makes it possible to solve the whole range of problems of the Stirling engine heater and hothead. The first IPPE developments in Russia in the field of Stirling free-piston engines, which make it possible to solve a number of problems inherent in engines with a drive mechanism, are described. The list of IPPE developments published in the proceedings of international conferences and patents is given in the bibliography.
