Abstract
October 29th marked the 100th anniversary of Mikhail Nikolaevich Ivanovsky's birth. He is an Honored Scientist and Engineer of the Russian Federation. Honored Scientist and Engineer of the Russian Federation, Laureate of the USSR State Prize, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor M. N. Ivanovsky is widely known throughout the world as the author and leader of fundamental and applied research in the fields of thermal physics, physical chemistry and liquid metal coolant technology.
His activities has been associated with the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering, where he led a large scientific team working on the development of liquid metals as coolants for nuclear power plants, primarily for space applications – Buk, Topaz, and Yenisei.
Under the leadership and direct participation of M. N. Ivanovsky, research was conducted on convective heat transfer in liquid metals, as well as heat transfer processes during their evaporation and condensation. Thanks to this research, he and his colleagues developed the physical and technological foundations of heat pipes. M. N. Ivanovsky worked on the development of virtually all currently known liquid metal coolants: mercury, sodium, potassium, lithium, cesium, eutectic alloys of sodium and potassium, lead, and bismuth.
Today, the students of the scientific school of physical chemists he founded at the Physics and Power Engineering Institute are continuing and expanding his work; a third generation of young specialists is already studying from his books.
