Abstract

Lumped parameter codes (LP-codes) are used to simulate heat and mass transfer processes in the containment of a nuclear power plant. However, CFD codes have recently been used a lot in nuclear reactor safety analysis, including processes within the containment atmosphere. To study local phenomena in the containment atmosphere, the codes of different dimensional resolutions, namely KUPOL-BR LP code and FlowVision CFD code, have been combined. KUPOL-BR LP code is designed for calculating medium parameters and simulating heat and mass transfer of fission products in the containment rooms of nuclear power plants with liquid metal coolant reactors. FlowVision CFD code is designed for three-dimensional simulation of liquid and gas flows and provides a detailed picture of the flow, pressure, temperature, concentration, and velocity fields. The implementation of the multi-scale modeling approach involves simulation using KUPOL-BR LP-code, with high-gradient flow regions selected. These high-gradient flow regions are studied in 3D modeling, using FlowVision CFD-code. To demonstrate the implementation of the multi-scale modeling technique, test calculations of heat and mass transfer processes were performed in model volumes.
